Doctors using cold laser to treat injuries
06:41 PM PST on Tuesday, November 27, 2007
There's a new high-tech approach that might help heal broken bones faster. It's called a cold laser because it emits light but no heat. Seattle chiropractor David Rameley uses it in his practice at Seattle Natural Health.
"For neck pain, low back pain, carpal tunnel, elbow pain, any kind of neurological symptoms, numbness and tingling," he said.
Delia Yeager has an entirely different problem - two broken bones. Although the erchonia laser is only FDA approved to treat pain, not fractures, some medical professionals are starting to spread the word.
"For broken bones we find that it decreases the healing time, increases their range of motion and decreases their pain," said Dr. Rameley.
We should point out that Yeager is also being seen by her regular doctor, but she credits the laser with speeding up the healing process.
"So that's much better than before. If you remember after the fracture and what you should, could do. So it's improving there. That's a huge difference," said Dr. Rameley.
Patients say they don't feel a thing, except afterwards.
"You feel a huge difference so it's sold me ... why not feel better without any pain? Why wouldn't I do that?" said Yeager.
Dr. Rameley says more research is need to find out why the cold laser seems to work for bones. Yeager doesn't care about that, she's more interested in the end result.
"The sooner I can go without the pain, the better," she said.
The cold laser is not covered by insurance. Each treatment costs about $40 and takes about 10 minutes.
