Clearing the air: a lung cancer special
02:51 PM PST on Tuesday, October 31, 2006
Many non smokers get diagnosed with lung cancer. Why? The answer may linger in your home, the air and the tip of your tongue. And for those who want to kick the habit and keep your kids from ever taking a puff, there are solutions, some of which are heating up Hollywood.
Lung cancer kills more people every year than breast, colon and prostate cancer combined.
Equally shocking is that more women than men get lung cancer. So deadly is the disease that 60 percent who receive a diagnosis of advanced stage lung cancer die within a year. Some die even sooner.
When the disease is advanced, it takes lives quickly and far too soon. Dana Reeve, the widow of actor Christopher Reeve, 44, announced she had the disease in August 2005. She died in March. Her death becomes a dramatic reminder that lung cancer strikes even non-smokers.
In this special program, we talk to lung cancer victims, explore the addictiveness of nicotine and smoking prevention, and learn about the latest treatment to treat lung cancer.
