Turning disability into ability

Rehabilitation technologist Kevin Grogg helps change lives, adapting simple things we all take for granted, switching on a light, a fan, even the TV.

"The patient would put their mouth on this end and be able to manipulate specific objects the way we might touch them with our hands," said Grogg.

He helps those who have lost use of their limbs.

"Giving our patients some level of control back when it might seem like all control has been lost post-injury, as compared to their pre-injury state," he said.

Marine Corporal Jerold Mason was paralyzed in a car crash. Contact from fellow marines, thoughts of his son and regular visits from his dad help him stay positive.

But it took Kevin's ingenuity to give Jerold the one thing that he missed most - his music.

"It like takes you away from the stress. I will always use music to do that," said Jerold.

Kevin adapted Jerold's touch screen I-pod. Now, Jerold can control it with a straw. This one small step is inspiring Jerold to work even harder.

"Allows me to think of times when I did have the use of my arms, my legs and you know it makes me want to push harder," he said.

It's too soon to know how much movement Jerold will  regain, but he's working hard in rehab, getting  stronger every day.

Sixty percent of spinal cord injury patients are 30 years old or younger. Most are men.
