New treatment for cellulite

11:09 AM PDT on Tuesday, August 15, 2006

Dimply skin, cottage cheese, cellulite, whatever you call it, it's never a welcome sight.

"It's something that's always bothered me and I've had cellulite for at least fifteen years, if not longer," said Patricia Izzo.

The solution is restylane, the same FDA-approved filler for wrinkles. Dermatologist Jeannette Graf says it's now working wonders on legs.

“It can be injected very superficially as well as deep so you can get it at all of the levels of skin," she said.

Restylane simply fills in the dimply spots.

"It's instant and it's fast. It's an office visit," said Dr. Graf.

Results should last between four and six months.

"I like the idea that it's a one time thing, basically; I'm not putting something on every night; I'm not coming back repeatedly," said patient Eileen Flannery."It wasn't painful. Just little tiny pricks."

A small amount of bruising is common.

So is this cellulite solution for everyone?

"Ideally, this is best suited for someone with very specific deep dimples and limited number of them," said dermatologist Ranella Hirsch.

She warns that the more cellulite you have, the more costly the fix.

"It can really range from the hundreds to thousands, which is a big part of my hesitation," she said.

But Eileen and Patricia both say it's money well spent.

Dr. Graf says the average cost for a typical patient in her practice is about $600 a leg.
