More homeowners turn to 'green' cleaning

06:40 PM PDT on Saturday, August 2, 2008

The average American home contains about 63 synthetic chemical products.

Exposure to such chemicals has been linked to asthma and other respiratory problems.

But there are some simple ways to make your home a better place.

Elizabeth Letsch is going green. She has organic drapes and bamboo floors.

"In little steps, the house is becoming more and more organic or more and more natural," she said.

Pediatrician David Berger says we are over disinfecting our homes.

"We don't need to live in a sterile world," said Dr. David Berger, of Wholistic Pediatrics. "We aren't sterile people. We have bacteria in our throats. We have bacteria on our skin. So we are not supposed to be sterile."

Berger has his office and home cleaned green to reduce exposure to toxins.

Bruce Sutton is the "Green Man." He not only uses natural cleaners, but also reusable supplies such as this linen napkin.

"We've probably saved a rain forest or two just by not using paper products when we clean," said Sutton, of Green Man Cleaning Company.

Bruce says you can even use homemade air-freshening products. Try boiling cinnamon or cloves. Lavender, vinegar and oregano are also natural disinfectants.

Like any products, Bruce says you have to try them and see what works best for you.

Other tips: Keep windows open as much as possible and take off your shoes at the door to prevent tracking toxins into your house.

Dry cleaners use an industrial solvent that is toxic in humans. Look for dry cleaners that use green methods.
