Mobile mammography clinic unveiled

SEATTLE - Some women will now be able to get mammograms at their convenience.
Safeway has partnered with the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center to bring digital mammography equipment to women who would otherwise have a difficult time getting a breast cancer screening.
The hope is that by making it less formal and more convenient, more women will get mammograms.
"We know that digital finds cancers earlier in many groups of women … that's very important," said Dr. Connie Lehman, Prof. of Radiology at the University of Washington.
The van's digital technology can detect cancer cells up to 28 percent more accurately than the traditional film method in certain groups of women, including young women, those with dense breast tissue, women who have not reached menopause and those who are under the age of 50.
The van will be staffed by a certified mammography technologist, an assistant and a driver and will serve up to 30 patients a day.
