Supplement is changing lives of those with HIV
06:37 PM PDT on Sunday, July 13, 2008
Selenium is found in turkey, beef and green veggies.
Selenium
"Selenium helps to boost the immune system," said Dr. Barry Hurwitz, University of Miami.
Hurwitz looked at selenium's effect in patients with HIV.
"I liken the effect of selenium to a lion tamer in a zoo. What it tends to do is make viruses more docile," he said.
His research showed that the virus increased in HIV patients on a placebo, but didn't in those taking selenium.
Eddie Orozco has been HIV positive for 21 years.
"I've had pretty much, about, all the treatments that are available," he said.
Nothing made an impact, until he took selenium.
"It was pretty astonishing to see the results," he said.
Eddie's viral load has dropped from 20,000 to 49 - considered undetectable.
"I think it could be an excellent adjunct -- not a replacement for anti-HIV medications, but an excellent adjunct to therapy," aid Dr. Hurwitz.
"I think it's done a wonderful thing for me," said Eddie.
Another benefit - since taking selenium, Eddie hasn't been sick once.
The strength used in the study was only 200 micrograms daily. That's half the maximum dose considered to be safe. It's also the same dosage used in many cancer studies.
You can buy selenium in any drug store.
Dr. Hurwitz says just make sure it's organic and labeled "selenium grown in yeast."
He also says you don't want to get your daily dose in a regular multi-vitamin.
