Supplements are becoming more popular for men and are used to prevent future health problems
"I sleep like a baby. I feel great,” says Gara. "Today I bought some CoQ 10 for the heart. I bought some green tea as an antioxidant."
Now in most stores, right along with pills just for women, there are shelves just for men.
Doctor Don Novey is a national expert in complementary medicine. For prostate health he recommends Saw Palmetto and Lycopene for the heart, omega fish oils, Picnogenol and L-arginine.
He says Flaxseed spread on your food may help protect against heart disease and cancer and he says it may even slow down hair loss.
He says that flaxseed spread is "very useful for decreasing some of the male hormone effects that lead to male patterned baldness.”
“The classic men's issues are things like prostate health; they may have problems with male-patterned baldness," said Novey.
On every remedy, it's crucial patients follow the directions on the bottles and tell their doctor what they're taking.
"If I had to make one comment, it's that herbs are drugs, and all the same rules apply," he said.
One other thing that Doctor Novey points out is that supplements can't cure serious disease. They're best used for prevention.
