Home fertility tests for couples now available in U.S.
09:04 AM PDT on Thursday, June 7, 2007
It's estimated that one in seven couples in the U.S. has trouble conceiving. Now, a test that was only available in Britain is offering hope to couples in the U.S.
The test is called Fertell, and it's the first at home fertility test for both men and women.
Having a baby can be a challenge for some couples. Now, this first of its kind fertility test is giving both men and women answers about their fertility.
"15 to 18 percent of couples are experiencing infertility issues," said Robert Thompson, president of Genosis, Inc., the maker of Fertell. "You're increasing your chances of conception by identifying issues early."

Thompson says the biggest advantage is being able to do the test at home.
"It enables it to be private, comfortable, and they can get the results exactly when they want them," said Thompson.
Here's how it works: Women take a urine test which measures hormone levels. For men, a sperm sample is required. It indicates the amount of sperm strong enough to make it to the egg.
"It tells you this test is normal or this test is outside normal range and if its outside normal range you are asked to contact your physician," said Thompson.
Thompson says it's not only easy to interpret, it's about 95 percent accurate. And that's why he believes Fertell will bring couples one step closer to conceiving.
"To be involved with a product that you know is going to help people to have kids it's just been incredibly rewarding," said Thompson.
Fertell is FDA approved. Results takes thirty minutes for a woman and eighty minutes for a man. It costs about $100 and is available at drugstores and online.
