Mother gives kidney to 2-year-old son
11:07 PM PDT on Wednesday, July 9, 2008
SEATTLE - A local mother is giving her child a gift that money can't buy.
Andra Mosesly is giving her son Andre his first and best chance at a life free of dialysis, by sharing her kidney with him.
When the Tacoma toddler was just three weeks old, his head and body began to swell.
"Andre was born with congenital nephrotic syndrome, it's a kidney disease," Andra Mosesly said.
Before he even turned 1, doctors had to remove Andre's kidneys, forcing him to spend huge portions of his short life undergoing dialysis.
On Wednesday, Andra gave him one of her kidneys.
"I'm going to have a normal baby," she said.
The Moseslys have eagerly awaited the day when Andre would be big enough and strong enough to accept a new organ.

At around 9 a.m. Wednesday doctors removed Andra's kidney at UW Medical Center and brought it to Children's Hospital, where surgeons then had to prep it to make it a better fit for Andre's little body.
Doctors started prepping Andre early in the morning. He was expected to be on the operating table for about 6 hours. He was still in surgery at the time this article was published.
Update Wednesday evening:
Andre's surgeon at Children's Hospital said the boy is doing very well. We'll keep you posted on his recovery.
You can donate to the Andre James Mosesly Fund at any Bank of America.
