HealthLink special: Cancer Breakthroughs - The Latest and Greatest

07:50 PM PST on Saturday, December 22, 2007

In this KING 5 Cancer Free Washington special hosted by Jean Enersen, learn about new research, new treatments and advanced technologies that are helping in the fight against cancer.

At the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Dr. Jim Olsen's new technique of "tumor painting" is showing great promise.

Using the venom from a type of scorpion that clings to cancer cells and nothing else, Dr. Olson has invented a way to help surgeons see where a tumor begins and ends by illuminating the cancerous cells.

Hear the personal stories of men, women, and even children who are all winning the battle through the newest, most advanced treatments.

- Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma patient Roger Sweet is part of a study headed by Dr. Ajay Gopal, who is working with radioactively tagged monoclonal antibodies to deliver high doeses of radiation to tumor sites, sparing the surrounding organs.

- Breast cancer patient Lisa Cigliana, who is part of a clinical trial for partial breast radiation called "brachytherapy," or radioactive seed implants.

- Colon cancer survivor Tiffany Heigle, who was diagnosed at age 33. Now 41, she is cancer-free due to sucessful surgeries and a cocktail of drugs.

Good news is here and even more is on the way, with many advances being developed right here in Seattle.
