Leslie Schafer reaches her goal.
Leslie Schafer of La Connor is the kind of woman who's always on the run, even when she's walking.
She had two big goals: to survive a recurring ovarian cancer, and, despite feeling ill, to finish a 5k walk that raises money for ovarian cancer research.
Could she do either, or both?
“If I can do it this year, I'll be extremely proud of me,” she said.
For Leslie, it all began with a small funny feeling in her stomach.
“When I laying down on my tummy flat, I thought I could feel something in my tummy, then I thought I couldn't,” she said.
Like most busy women, Leslie put off doing anything in 2002. She thought it was stress, maybe a hernia.
“Things had really changed in six weeks, really changed,” she said.
When she went to her doctor, she read his face the way he read her test results.
“He was upset, and I probably was just in shock. Because he said, ‘I just know that it's ovarian cancer,’” she said.
It was.
Leslie had a hysterectomy and 18 months of chemo, but less than a year later the cancer came back. Despite no family history of ovarian cancer, this is her third recurrence.
“Not very happy that I'm doing this again. But I do feel extremely optimistic because I feel good … except for the effects of chemo,” she said with a chuckle.
Which brings Leslie to the Swedish Summer Run. She wanted to help other women by raising funds for research on ovarian cancer.
Leslie had one of the biggest teams in the race - about 50 family members, friends and supporters.
“She's the most unbelievable trooper, and we're here to support her,” said Leslie’s sister, Jackie Kotkins.
Before the race, Leslie wasn't sure she could reach her goal.
“I'm ready for the finish. It's been really great, but I'm hot!” she said.
But her team cheered her on and she fought the fatigue the same way she fights her cancer, until no one doubts she'll make the finish line.
