A panel of experts commissioned by the U.S. National Cancer Institute has recommended that the word "cancer" be redefined as a medical diagnosis. Their reasoning is that the word often frightens patients and convinces them to seek more drastic treatment than they need, which could harm their health.
Brian Reid, a doctor at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Institute, was part of the task force. He joined KING 5 News to discuss the reasons behind the group's recommendation.
The next step for the group will be to issue recommendations on specific types of cancer. What is also needed, Dr. Reid said, is the identification of bio-markers to determine which cancers are more likely to become aggressive and spread.
