For some, IV hydration offers the solution to problems like dehydration, exhaustion or a hangover. However, critics warn the risks may outweigh the potential benefits.

Dr. Johnny Parvani has a hydration clinic that was created by a group of emergency room doctors who believe it's better to get IVs in a relaxed, medical setting.

Critics of the treatment say there's no research that these drips are beneficial. They also point to risks ranging from inflammation to the vein to infection or even an air embolus.

However, Dr. Parvani and his colleagues argue that the treatments are safe and no different from what people receive in a hospital setting.

These types of IV therapies are typically not covered by insurance. Providers tend to be naturopaths or holistic physicians.
