SEATTLE (AP) -- A new federal study says that Washington state has the highest rate of parents exempting their children from vaccines.

The report by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a first of its kind, says that 6.2 percent of kindergarteners in the state have parent-signed exemptions for one or more vaccines for diseases such as polio, whooping cough, measles hepatitis B and chickenpox. The parent exemptions overrule the school requirements for these vaccines.

State Secretary of Healthy Mary Selecky says that kids who aren't fully immunized aren't protected from these health risks. She says that people can't be complacent on the health risks, and that non-vaccinated children spread the diseases easier.

The data from the CDC was collected from the 2009-2010 school year.

wmdkitty-If you're vaccinated, you're not in danger. You don't want your kids exposed to unvaccinated children, go ahead and homeschool. That's your choice. If you don't want YOUR rights trampled on, don't attempt to trample on the rights of others.

My parents chose not to have me vaccinated when I was a baby. The only childhood disease I got was chickenpox. I was slightly ill for about a week, and then I got over it. Other than occasional colds and the flu once every few years, I am a very healthy person. A few years ago I started work at a clinic, and AFTER I was hired they told me that in order to keep my job I had to get an MMR. I was in a tight spot financially, so I went ahead and got it done...and spent the next week at home sick with a high fever, achy joints, nausea, and red bumps all over me. I'll never get another vaccine. And that is my choice. I have no problem with parents choosing to vaccinate their children, but I also don't think it's fair to be judgemental towards those who choose not to. There are valid reasons for deciding not to vaccinate, just as there are valid reasons for chosing to vaccinate. Doesn't make someone a "religious wack-o", it just means they have a different opinion.

I know a lot of children who have never been vaccinated and are also very healthy as well. Its a choice for the parents to make and none of us should criticize if a family decides to vaccinate or not vaccinate.

I'm not talking about the flu or common cold...my kids are vaccinated and very healthy....wait until your children are exposed to measles or whooping cough...then you wish you would have vaccinated...

@baristababy I completely agree. If you vaccinate your children and they get sick you will feel like the worst parent in the world. If you dont vaccinate them and they get sick you will feel like the worst parent in the world.... So what it comes down to is that each of us have to make an informed decision and decide what we feel is best for our family.. We can only make a decision for our family and we should respect the decision another family made.

I completely respect a parents decision not to vaccinate, I have several friends who have decided not to. What makes me angry is when parents who don't vaccinate look down on me because i made an informed decision to do so with my own kids. I guess you just can't please everyone!

@mikthrac what you must be talking about is the flu vaccine and that has got to be the worst!!. Just look at the math. There are thousands of strains of influenza viruses, They can't vaccine for all of them so they take a guess at what they think will be the dominate strains. Statistics say that you are going to probably be wrong. Not to mention countless studies have been done showing that the flu vaccine gets a large number of people sick. Do your own research from multiple sources. Not opinion papers but the actual research studies done.......If your kids are already vaccinated they shouldn't be getting sick from the non vaccinated kids anyways.

I think its our right not to vaccinate but at an age were kids can make up there own minds or go off to college in other countrys they then should be vaccinated.

Washington is filled with religious wack-o's who don't trust anyone or anything outside of their churches. They'll trust God to take care of their children. "The world holds two classes of men - intelligent men without religion, and religious men without intelligence."

And that's why everyone's sick all the time..... I vaccinate my kids so they don't get sick but half their friends are not...... so they end up getting sick anyway.....people, get your kids vaccinated!

Some of these vaccines are absolutely ridiculous anyways. Why are we vaccinating newborns for Hep B. Unless the mother has Hep B there is absolutely no reason for this vaccine in a newborn especially because a newborns immune system isn't fully developed so the vaccine actually does very little.

With the chances of getting the disease from the vaccine higher than catching the disease, its no wonder that they are saying no. Pollio and a few others have a higher percentage of catching the disease from the vaccine, than in the real world. I myself signed for my children, and informed them that they would have to get vaccinated for certain diseases because of the high percentage that caught the disease from the vaccine. But this was back in the mid 80's as my children are now having their own kids. If the numbers are still the same, i feel they have every right to sign the papperwork.
