Just how healthy is a vegan lifestyle? Experts say more and more people, including former President Bill Clinton, are shunning animal products in favor of a  plant based diet -- that means no meat or dairy. It's not for everyone.

Sixty-two-year-old Rebecca Williams doesn't want to be on pills forever so so she's trying a different approach with a vegan diet.

"The very second day, I think I started feeling better, more energy," said Williams.

She was already a vegetarian, but being a vegan is more restrictive. No animal products period--including dairy and eggs.

"It is a little bit of a change and whole lot of people know that they want to do it because they know if they do it they can get rid of all the cholesterol, all of the animal fat and they can be slim and healthy," said Dr. Neal Barnard from the Physicians for Responsible Medicine.

Barnard says if former President Clinton can live the vegan life, anyone can.

"He looked terrific when Chelsea got married. He was 24, 26 pounds lighter, but the reason he did it was for a healthy heart. He didn't want to go back and and have heart surgery again. Diet can do the same thing," he said.

Dr. Barnard says a plant-based diet can help people lower their cholesterol, blood pressure, and lose weight. But it does require a lot of meal planning. Vegan convenience foods can help ease the transition, but dietitians say just because it's vegan, doesn't mean it's healthy.

"If it comes in a package, it's still a processed food," said registered dietician Rececca Scritchfield.

All that food can still be packed with calories, sodium and sugar, so read labels carefully, she advised.

But the vegan diet is paying off for Rebecca Williams. She's gone from a size 18 to a size 10. Her daughter was so impressed.  She's now a vegan too.

"Obviously, I lost weight, which was a good motivation. But that was five months ago and I'm still sticking with it and it just gets easier every day," said Williams.

Dietitians say vegan diets can be very healthy, but you do need make sure you're monitoring your vitamins and minerals. Vegans often have vitamin B12 and protein deficiencies.

I must say I admire anyone that can live this lifestyle. I have tried, and failed miserably, as I do not have the patience, or will power to prepare all of my meals. More power to those that can stick with this, i'm sure the rewards outweigh the negative.

@collegeguy the only "BIG flaws in the Vegan lifestyle" are the SAME as in a non-vegan diet, and you listed them. Processed and fast food. and I repeat, posting myths will not magically make them real. "A healthy balance of foods" what you think we only eat lettuce and carrots? What was in YOUR lunch today? There are not enough characters remaining to list the variety in my box!

"Dietitians say vegan diets can be very healthy, but you do need make sure you're monitoring your vitamins and minerals. Vegans often have vitamin B12 and protein deficiencies." Shouldn't a statement be checked before printed?? All of the Vitamin B12 in the world ultimately comes from bacteria. Neither plants nor animals can synthesize it. But plants contain B12 when they come in contact with soil bacteria that produce it. Animal foods are rich in B12 only because animals >>>eat foods that contain it.<<< and not enough protein?? Like my 2y older brother with TRIPLE bypass surgery, family with blown out knees, arthritis, sleep problems, are on their 3rd or 4th level of drugs to 'fix' the side effects of the one level down drug. Their children/grandchildren sick 1-2wks/month with the 'traditional' ear aches, stomach flu, sore throats, colds... adults home when a common cold becomes bronchitis... is eating rotting carcasses really worth it?

There are BIG flaws in the Vegan lifestyle and that is very much that you miss out on some vitamins that you just don't get from meat and dairy. A healthy balance of foods is far more healthy than vegan or a very meat filled diet. Also, staying away from processed food will do more for you than veganism also. I hate how articles like this make it sound like being a vegan is the only smart way to eat when it is not. It is all about eating smart in general, which few of us do.

I think some people are predisposed to being carnivores or herbivores. I imagine it comes from history or something. I can't hardly afford to eat meat but I know that when I start to feel sick I have to eat some and have to be careful not to go on a meat bender. Other times I would rather eat nothing than vegetables. And then I want vegetables the way my Grandma made them! I agree with @Stryker quite a bit. Can't live without fried chicken. Broiled or bbq'd pork ribs. Roast beef. Pork chops... ..... ..... Eating meat doesn't mean you are going to die from eating it.

Vegans "often" have vitamin B12 and protein deficiencies. I think this statement is misleading. Vegans who eat nothing but junk food likely have protein deficiencies, but If you are vegan, you are likely concerned with your health and have done the research and are eating appropriately and taking B12 supplements.
