Planned Parenthood donations reach $900K

NEW YORK -- Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the renowned breast-cancer charity, faced an escalating backlash Thursday over its decision to cut breast-screening grants to Planned Parenthood. Some of Komen's local affiliates are openly upset, and at least one top official has quit, reportedly in protest.

Meanwhile, Komen has been deluged with negative emails and Facebook postings, accusing it of knuckling under to pressure from anti-abortion groups, since The Associated Press reported on Tuesday that it was halting grants that Planned Parenthood affiliates used for breast exams and related services. The grants totaled $680,000 last year.

Planned Parenthood has been heartened by an outpouring of support in response to the cutoff. In addition to $400,000 in smaller donations from 6,000 people, it is receiving $250,000 from a family foundation in Dallas and a $250,000 pledge announced Thursday by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to match future donations.

In Washington, 26 U.S. senators -- all Democrats except for independent Bernie Sanders of Vermont -- signed a letter calling on Komen to reconsider its decision.

"It would be tragic if any woman -- let alone thousands of women -- lost access to these potentially lifesaving screenings because of a politically motivated attack," the senators wrote.

Komen's top leaders, in their first news conference since the controversy erupted, denied Planned Parenthood's assertion that the decision was driven by pressure from anti-abortion groups.

"We don't base our decisions on whether one side or the other will be pleased," said Komen's founder and CEO, Nancy Brinker.

Komen has said the decision stemmed from newly adopted criteria barring grants to organizations under investigation -- affecting Planned Parenthood because of an inquiry by a Republican congressman acting with encouragement from anti-abortion activists.

Brinker said Thursday that there were additional factors, notably changes in the types of breast-health service providers it wanted to support. However, she said grants would continue this year to three of the 19 Planned Parenthood affiliates -- in Denver, California's Orange County, and Waco, Texas -- because they served clientele with few other breast-screening options.

A source with direct knowledge of decision-making at Komen's headquarters in Dallas gave a different account, saying the grant-making criteria were adopted with the deliberate intention of targeting Planned Parenthood. The criteria's impact on Planned Parenthood, and its status as the focus of government investigations, were highlighted in a memo distributed to Komen affiliates in December.

According to the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of repercussions, a driving force behind the move was Karen Handel, who was hired by Komen last year as vice president for public policy after losing a campaign for governor in Georgia in which she stressed her anti-abortion views and frequently denounced Planned Parenthood.

Brinker, in an interview with MSNBC, said Handel didn't have a significant role in the policy change.

The source also said that Mollie Williams, who had been Komen's director of community health programs, had resigned in protest over the grant cutoff.

Williams, in an email, said she could not comment on her departure for reasons of professional confidentiality, but she was clear about her views.

"I have dedicated my career to fighting for the rights of the marginalized and underserved," she wrote. "And I believe it would be a mistake for any organization to bow to political pressure and compromise its mission."

Williams said she was saddened by the rift because she admired both Komen and Planned Parenthood.

"I am hopeful their passionate and courageous leaders, Nancy Brinker and Cecile Richards, can swiftly resolve this conflict in a manner that benefits the women they both serve."

Among Komen's affiliates, there were clear signs of discomfort with the decision. The Connecticut branch received scores of supportive emails after expressing frustration about the cutoffs and good will toward Planned Parenthood.

The board of the Arkansas affiliate issued a statement noting that the decision was made at Komen headquarters "without input from affiliates," and called for the new policy to be changed.

"We hope Komen national will reverse its position on granting to organizations under investigation because we feel decisions of this nature should be made only after the investigation is complete," the statement said.

At the Orange County affiliate in Costa Mesa, Calif., executive director Lisa Wolter said there have been lots of exchanges with headquarters.

"We're very troubled by the reaction, and we want to make sure there are clarifications," she said.

The American Association of University Women, in protest over Komen's decision, said it was scrapping plans to offer a Komen Race for the Cure as one of the activities at its upcoming National Conference for College Women Student Leaders.

"AAUW is disappointed that some are playing politics with women's health and jeopardizing care for the most vulnerable among us," said Lisa Maatz, the association's director of public policy.

Though comments posted on Komen's Facebook page seemed to be mostly critical of the grant decision, Brinker said donations to the charity had increased since Tuesday.

@Freedom Frank...so what would be your response to the the recent recall of birth control pills by a drug company? The women taking those pills were being responsible and now may face the reality of an unwanted or unplanned pregnancy through no fault of their own. My daughter has a chronic health problem that makes an unplanned pregnancy dangerous. We talked very openly about this and when she made the decision to become sexually active, she came to me and we took steps to make sure the risks would be considerably lessened. If something should happen, I want her to have all the options available to her. I am pro choice, but not pro abortion. You sound like this decision is a capricious one, made with little thought and soul searching...this is just not so. Making abortion illegal won't stop it...it will just take it back to the back alley days. People with money and resources will always find a doctor willing to look the other way. Education and meaningful and open discourse are key.

Cheers to the Komen Foundation for exercising their right to choose who they donate to. Jeers to public and private citizens (Senators Murray and Cantwell are you listening?) who seek to coerce or intimidate the Komen Foundation into making continued 'voluntary' contributions. By its very name, Planned Parenthood is primarily in the business of providing low cost/no cost contraception and abortion services. Let other private donors who support that mission contribute, as they are doing.

realitychk, There are more couples waiting to adopt a baby than you can imagine. Most of these hopeful parents would be happy to support the pregnant mother's medical needs during pregnancy. Support for these kids would NOT be an issue. For the record, I am pro-choice, but you're painting with just as big a brush as you rail against.

@freedomfrank But Conservatives don't want to teach people about birth control. And you try telling adolescent teens not to have sex. It's a one two whammy, that if Conservatives reversed their thoughts about sex education, there'd be much less of a need for abortions.

Everyone who is opposed to abortion should sign up to support the unwanted child. Be prepared to raise, educate and support this child. It is simple to say that women are responsible and forget the "other half" of the equation. Painting with a broad brush all that might seek to not have a child is indicative of a lack of responsibility on YOUR part. If you choose to force a woman to carry a pregnancy to full term and ensure her nutritional health during that time, are you willing to provide for the child AFTER. Seems that there are way too many who speak of viability at conception but don't want to make the socioeconomic contributions to care for children born to women who cannot care for them a priority. If society wants to allow women to be "free" people as men then BOTH are responsible and blaming the woman in all cases yet giving no way out means that children suffer. Put your money where your mouth is. Pay extra taxes. Better yet. Adopt the children.

@skok_cush, yes, same can be said to those "militants" at Koman as well. They bring on a staunch anti-abortionist, PP comes under investigation from anti-abortionists, and sudenly, PP is cut off because they are under investigation from the anti-abortionists at the SAME time the anit-abortion movement is rallying EVERYTHING they can to take out anyone who opposes them by pushing any and all radically conservative republicans to push to try and cut funding at all levels to PP and others who provide abortions. This is nothing short of the radical conservatives forcing their hypocritical views on this country. Women deserve the right to choose for themselves and not be forced to keep a child that was concieved from hate (i.e. rape). The term pro-life is not even really pro-life as sometimes an abortion can save the mother in the case where the pregnancy goes wrong and the choice is between the mother's and the child's lfe.

When people stop GIVING you stuff they turn into bad people. Quit acting like the world owes you something. You are not entitled to anything. Instead of spending your time crying about it, try to be proactive and get the donations yourself. Or find a way to meet their new criteria instead of burning the bridge. Congratulations to women with limited income everywhere and the same goes to Gay and lesbian couples who have been waiting to finally be able to get MARRIED. All I can say is because of Planned Parenthood I never had to make the decision on adoption or abortion, because of their exams and advice and options I was never in that position to which I am thankful. They have been my primary health care source since I was 15 (10 years now) insured or not and because of the education they bring to a community I never had to make that tough decision. That is where the break-down is though, to all of you anti-this and anti-that education is step one in the right direction and that is why I will continue to donate time and money to an organization that understands that.

@Rattler And I supposed you will vote overwhelmingly for schooling, housing, feeding and raising of those 230,000 children, right? Because a majority of them would have been born into poverty stricken households. But in reality, you don't care. You just want to ban abortions and call it a day, rather than dealing with the consequences that come from banning them. Typical conservative behavior that I see. You care about yourselves and your wallets, not what's best for society as a whole.

too too ... that's what liberals don't understand. Their morality is situational. There is a very substantial, some even say majority, that do not believe in abortions. It's not a question about extending a payroll tax cut .. or a policy disagreement on budget spending, it's a belief about life. Only 3%? That was 230,000 aborted lives and that is not trivial. PP has it's supporters and its mission... fine. Komen transcends both views. The correct response was support PP if you believe in it... as it appears some finally did... instead of waiting for someone else or taxes to do it. You got galvanized into action. Perfect solution, Now, cut federal funding and let PP rise of fall on the power and merits of their beliefs. Now I will resume my charitable contribution of the Komen Foundation. Perfect. You want that church and state wall? Me too.. stop trying to get churches to bend to a liberal philosophy. Stop the war on the Catholic church through Obamacare..

Yes Planned parenthood provides abortions and yes they are the largest providers of abortions but that is because they are the single largest provider for womens health.... You conservatives leave out that part.. Let me say that again....Single largest provider for women's health. Abortions make up a small portion of what they do. They do cancer screenings, breast and cervical to name a few. Provide birth control to patients and help with family planning. They do not force someone to have an abortion.. They give that as an option as well as give info on adoption and support on raising a child.

We've all seen these frivolous and politcally motivated investigations that drag on and on with no charges ever being filed. It's basically "guilt until proven innocent". The Komen Foundation should wait until actual charges are file or wrongdoing is actually discovered before pulling grants that HELP women! I'm pulling my financial support from Komen over this. Planned Parenthood? Planned Parenthood is not about planning parenthood. They are about abortions. Planned Abortions. Planned Parenthood is to planning parenthood like a demoliton company is to construction. One builds, the other destroys. Don't believe me? Take a look at this outfit's revenues. Almost all from abortions. What percent of women get abortions vs adoptions? 99% get abortions. Planned Parenthood would not exist except to provide abortions. Millions of them over the years. Many to minors, many to minors who have been raped where the "counselors" have broken laws by not reporting to authorities. I could go on and on about this dispicable organization. The Komen Foundation did the right thing. Hopefully their decision will be final once the truth finally comes out in court about PP.

Heidi6, abortion is only roughly 5% of what Planned Parenthood does. Most of its services are healthcare services for women. Before I had a job that provided health insurance, I went to Planned Parenthood for my annual exam. Now that I have insurance I still go there, partly to educate people that this is the majority of what they do. They even do prenatal care. The belief that they are mostly an abortion factory is the result of vigorous propaganda by anti-abortion groups and ill-informed people. I am not sure where you are getting your information, but there are many Planned Parenthood clinics that do mammograms. Not every single one does them, but there are many that do. Before you criticize how factual a news story is, it is probably best to get the facts from reputable sources.

Also about 90% of their business is abortion. You made it sound like they do very few abortions. There hafve been investigations of PP for allowing under age abortions with out parental consent, not reporting underage females that seek abortions which is statuatory rape. Susan G Komen is still for breast cancer research which is not done by PP. Please try to be factual with your reporting of news. Mamograms are the best way to detect early breast cancer and PP does not do any of these!

For those who believe in the saying: "everything happens for a reason" there is a reason that some people cannot have children (maybe lots of reasons), and there are reasons that some people choose to make a choice that some others do not approve of. Like it or not, it's their human right to do as they see fit for their life. Until life has emerged from the womb, it is under their control. You, I or no one else controls what happens; only the person who is carrying has control. We can debate this topic for eternity (likely will be) and it will not change the fact. It's only one person's choice, no one else's. Some one actually does have a choice, they were given that choice because they are woman, and they were given the choice to think and do what is right for them. Rather than waste time debating the right to choice, donate your time to help those who chose to give birth and cannot take care of their child, or cannot afford childcare. There are a myriad of ways to help those in need

It is not Jean Enerson's place to make political comments. She specifically identified the Congressman who initiated the Planned Parenthood investigation as a "Conservative male." Mimi Jung reported on morning news stating the news without political commentary. If anything, the Congressman should be praised for initiating an investigation into an entity that has worked above scrutiny for too long. Susan G. Koman has made a stand with the integrity to maintain its position until the investigation is resolved. It may come as a shock to many voters, but integrity still has a place in the business world and life in general. P P might go back and reconsider their company name - parenthood should be a planned and the result of a purposeful enactment of that plan, not determined by OOOPPS! Political commentary is becoming far too evident in Ms Enerson's "reporting." She should work for a political organization, not a news desk. She no longer fits the reporting integrity of KING5.

Komen funded approximately 170,000 out of 4 million exams over five years, which is 4.25% of the exams Planned Parenthood did. This is hardly a huge dent in their funding. And who says Planned Parenthood is entitled to grant money from a charitable organization (or anyone for that matter) in the first place? Can they not associate themselves with (or disassociate themselves from) whomever they choose?

I don't care what 'decision' a person makes with their body. I don't need to pay for their lack of responsibility. Nor should I pay for it.

I recognize that abortion is legal and allowed under the law of the land. But I still am opposed to it. I am all for a woman's right to choose what they do with their body up until the point at which they choose to conceive a child. This is a choice, plain and simple. At this point a woman now has a larger obligation which is much bigger than their own selfish desires. This baloney about "woman's health" is mostly bogus. Giving birth has it's risks of course, but with the advance of science and medicine rarely does someone fail to survive. I happen to know several couples who are unable to conceive and have been waiting for the opportunity to adopt for a very long time. Part of the problem is that it costs several times more to adopt than to go have a baby (go figure). I am all for preventing unwanted pregnancies before they occur. In fact, lets go all out on that. I'm sorry if you disagree with my opinion. We will have to agree to disagree.

Over the years I have given 10s of thousands to the Komen foundation. It stops today. That was money donated for breast exams. Planned Parenthood does so much MORE than abortions. That is merely one option offered out of hundreds of other things it does. You people who pull because of the one thing, how many things have you overlooked for a president? How many things have you overlooked for a loved one? And if you are a woman, you should be outraged. This will ultimately cost poor women's lives. Shame on Komen and shame on you.

@Mytake While I can't spare 20k unfortunately, I will be withdrawing my annual contribution to Komen and using the money to double my contribution to Planned Parenthood. And for all of you against a women's right to choose what she does with her body, are you going to be the first in line to adopt, support and raise the child that she doesn't want and can't afford? To prevent the need for abortions, are you going to support real sex education, which explains and promotes both abstinence AND birth control, rather then the proven failed abstinence only education? Believe me, I'd rather abortions would be unnecessary, due to women having the tools and knowledge to prevent unwanted pregnancy, but until Americans can get over their fear of sex education and contraceptives, abortions will happen, whether legally or illegally.

I am opposed to abortion and I am opposed to the death penalty. I think this issue is really about the Komen Foundation focusing it's attention where it really ought to be. Many people raising and donating money to Komen would have a problem with Komen funneling money to an abortion factory. I wouldn't have a problem donating to Planned Parenthood if they quit the abortions and focused on counseling unwed mothers, providing pregnancy prevention guidance, and helped direct unfit mothers to legitimate adoption agencies. What Komen does is great and there should be more of it. Good for Komen.

Whats better, aborting a child from a mother who doesn't have the intelligence or capability of raising one properly? Or allowing that child to be born and suffer daily through a life of poverty or abuse that eventually leads to that child being another criminal and dredge on society? Don't give me the adoption cop out answer either. The state orphanages and foster programs are a complete mess. I have 5 foster brothers I grew up with and saw them shuffled from bad home to bad home and eventually 3 of them killed themselves because of the situation. So is that more humane than aborting a baby before it has any cognitive or conscious memory function in the brain?

The Suan G Komen foundation is one of the biggest charity frauds being perpetrated on the public. You have to pay money to raise money for them. If you don't raise enough money they will charge you what they think you should have raised. The Red Cross doesn't charge people to raise money for their benefit. Don't be scammed. $420 million in gross revenues in 2010, of which only 31% went to treatment and research. Net collections increased by some $70 million in 2010 over 2009, yet research only increased $5 million, and treatment actually decreased by $2 million. The money they raise goes to "cancer awareness", first, research is second, treatment last. They spent more money on fund raising than on treatment. I think that we are all pretty aware of breast cancer. How about re-alligning their priorities?

Abortion has happened since the beginning of time. I think it's far better that if a woman is going to abort her pregnancy that it's done in a safe and sane environment, like Planned Parenthood, than in some back alley, or dirty back room. Planned Parenthood does so much more than abortions, so this hurts women who would never dream of having an abortion.

Right to choose. Where are the child's rights? I'll bet the child wants to me murdered a whole lot less than the woman wants to be pregnant. All too often we use the words "women's rights". Let me introduce you females to another word. Accountability. That means to be responsible for your own actions. Just like you are taking on the responsibility of the life that was entrusted to you by God, nature, evolution, or whatever you choose to believe in. You had the right to choose to have sex. You had the right to choose whether or not to use birth control. Above all you had the right to choose not to have sex until you were ready to be a parent. NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO MURDER!!!

@tootoo You're absolutely right. Let's give everyone that defense. The next time a kid goes in and shoots up his school, his defense should be "I had the right to with my own legs walk into my parents room, with my own hands grab my parents gun, and with my own brain make the decision to go kill 27 of my fellow students". The right of the woman ends when she makes life. She has no more right to kill her unborn child than I have to drown mine. Both are unconscionable. Religion or no, a woman who has an abortion is guilt of murder and should be treated as such. My place is not to hold a woman accountable for her soul, but it's everyone's responsibility to protect a child, even an unborn one.

I think if the average American knew, they would shun this organization as well. Red Cross is another highest self paid charities too. This should not be a political or religious debate. It's about ethics and morals. Why should a woman be allowed to resort to "MURDER" just because she is too stupid or lazy to use birth control. And don't give me the old "what about a woman who is raped" excuse. The child still doesn't deserve to be "murdered". I love how democrats support the killing of an innocent child, a human being with a heartbeat. These same people scream bloody murder at the killing of a murderer on death row. You lose the right to the old "my body, my choice" when you put another living thing inside of it.

Poor women get the screening...at no cost to themselves and have been getting it for decades. It is the woman who has lousy insurance who has to dig deep for the $$ to pay for a mammogram! You Libs need to pull your head out of the sand....just once....and see that EVERYTHING is either political or bordering on political in today's society. But we don't all have to drink your 'kool aid' to know right from wrong. It's ironic that Planned Parenthood was ever receiving funds from the Susan G. Komen foundation in the first place because PP, as a level 1 facility, is not licensed to own or operate mammogram equipment. Susan G. Komen gave a strange explanation once as to how those funds could be used for women to obtain mammograms at other healthcare facilities but it was all rather fuzzy. Perhaps Susan G. Komen does not want to be associated with PP because certain of their clinics were found to be aiding members of the sex trade and statutory rapists by not reporting these individuals when it is the law to do so. Some clinics have also gone against parental notification rights while others were shown to have "cooked the books". This may not be indicative of all PP clinics but it does warrant an investigation.
