Single-load pods make doing the laundry easier, but their bright colors and jelly-like consistency also tempt children to touch or taste them. More parents have been calling poison control centers after their child ingested or inhaled detergent in these pods.

The American Cleaning Institute's new safety campaign puts the responsibility on parents' shoulders, but government safety officials say the industry should be doing more to prevent these accidents from happening, NBC's Liz Crenshaw reports.

So why doesn't the Consumer Product Safety Commission mandate standards?

The chairman says if the industry does it voluntarily, it's faster, which puts fewer children at risk.
