Scientists from Stanford University School of Medicine are reporting early but potentially exciting results on an experimental vaccine for Type I diabetes.

The vaccine in this case is different from conventional vaccines like those for the flu, which turn on a specific immune response.

This vaccine works by turning off an immune response that's a hallmark of Type I diabetes.  Eighty patients were involved in the current study. Results are promising that the vaccine could work if confirmed in larger studies.
