News of the national prescription drug shortage came to light last November. Since then, things have gotten worse, not better -- even with the White House and Congress pushing for reforms. Before now, the shortages affected one or two medications within a class of drugs, so substitutions could be made. Now entire classes of some drugs are unavailable.

I know about this first hand. Its not just prescription drugs that are is short supply. Think about the ingredients that go into TPN bags for patients that cannot eat while in the hospital and get meds and nourishment by the bag...Very disturbing indeed...

I did not read one single post that was privvy to the real problem. I take a med that is classified as a 'controlled substance". As of October of last year, that med went from $21 a month for a 30 day supply to $88 for 30 day supply in November to $156 for a 30 day supply in December. The pharmacists told me the DEA was regulating the amounts the pharmaceutical companies could make. The Obama administration was trying to get the DEA to relax it's grip. The reason the DEA created this "false shortage" was to try and keep these controlled substances off the street. So in their "infinite wisdom" the people who really needed the medication could not get it. Those same pharmacists told me the only thing the DEA accomplished was a grand profit for those pharmaceutical companies and drove up the price on the street. The street pushers made bank! Obamacare didn't do it! I always know when someone doesn't have a clue to what is going on by blaming Obama.

WhoMe - if there's no profit in making generic drugs, then why do drug companies make them? Why did they ever? Why are there entire corporations devoted to this practice? Please, enlighten us all.

What planet are you from Sooth? The reason behind the shortages are the companies not making the drugs when they hit generic level and the company can't make as much money so they shut that line down and work on others where the profit margin is huge. Thats the problem with our medical system it is run for profit and not results. Thats why we are 28 or 29th in the world in health care. No other industrial nation allows for profit basic health care and we shouldn't either. Obamacare as you put it is a republican light idea what we need is a national insurance system that we all belong to. No one should be punished for having an accident, or a serious illness and be forced to go bankrupt. The only way to make health care affordable is to pool us all together it boggles my mind how the right can't get this. Remember it's WE the people not ME.

Welcome to the future. With Obamacare this will only get worse, not better. Wait until they start to ration Medicare treatments. It is not an if, but when. One thing seems sure, it may be a way to control the population growth. Part of the the " green" agenda??

I wish they said WHICH drugs are becoming so scarce; is it Insulin, high blood pressure medications, cholesterol medications or what? I can't believe this information was not included. It sounds like drug companies extorting the public. Who says there is a shortage? All this is important to this article.
