Women who smoke while pregnant put their children at risk for many problems. The latest discovery shows that smoking can cause hearing loss.

Researchers studied nearly 1,000 adolescents and found that those exposed to smoke in the womb were three times more likely to experience mild hearing loss as teenagers.

The study accounted for factors like exposure to loud concerts or frequent headphone use. It wasn't able to determine exactly how the damage is caused while the child is in the womb, but it did point out that hearing loss could lead to other problems for children, including cognitive and behavioral issues or even lower IQ and dropping out of school.

The research was published in JAMA Otolaryngology.
