It sounds strange - a hormone the body creates during pregnancy is being used to help women and men lose weight. And the promise is to do it without feeling hungry or having to exercise.

For years, Judy Carey has hidden behind the camera. But Judy isn't the same woman anymore.

"I've lost 43 pounds total and feel great," she said.

She did it by rubbing a little cream on her wrists daily.

"HCG is human chorionic gonadotropin. It's the pregnancy hormone," said Carey.

Gynecologist Dr. Robert True say the hormone, which helps ensure that a developing baby gets enough calories, can also works wonders for women who are not pregnant. Men too. Here's how it works.

Dieters are restricted to 500 calories a day. They also take HCG by injection or in compounded cream form.

"Your body says, 'Wow, they're not feeding me. I need to feed this baby,' because (your body) thinks you're pregnant because you've got that HCG going into your body," said True. "If it thinks you're pregnant, it's going to force your body to pull the nutrients from the stored areas of fat in your body. It's going to force that to happen."

True says fat calories coursing through the bloodstream make people feel like they've just eaten. He maintains that HCG and calorie restriction together set the body up for extreme weight loss, but not everyone is a believer.

"500 calories a day is a starvation diet by any definition, no matter how small you might be.  So if you adhere to that with enough willpower, of course you're going to lose weight," said Dr. David Cummings, University of Washington Diabetes and Obesity Center.

Cummings points to several reputable studies that call the diet worthless and ineffective.

"Taking something that's unnecessary and involves injection when there's not only ambiguity in the field but actual clear cut disproof -- tested, failed. That's not ethical, and so to promote it would be considered unethical behavior," said Cummings.

So few calories can also put dieters at risk for dangerous vitamin deficiencies or electrolyte imbalances.  That's why True insists that his patients come in twice monthly for blood tests and follow-up examinations, which can add hundreds of dollars in additional costs over the course of the diet.

Judy went from a size 14 to a size six, but it wasn't easy.

"Some of the other friends I had were never hungry, but I was a little bit hungry. So, it was a little hard staying on track," said Carey.

But now she no longer dreads getting in front of the camera.

HCG is not FDA approved for weight loss. Doctors must prescribe it off label for that use. Beware of do-it-yourself products sold over the Internet.

I ordered this pai you guo tea from china a 2 months ago. 18 pack in one box I lost 13 pounds with on box. Mix in a cup of hot water and drink first thing in the morning. I do not feel hungry at all, I have a sweet tooth and do not experience any cravings at all but know I have to eat so I eat a small portion of whatever is available. I'm on my second box I take it everyother day now, I experience a lot of energy but can't seem to fall asleep at night. I have not experienced any adversed side effects. It makes me thirsty, so I drink a lot of water. I will continue to take it untill I reach my goal weight, about 4 more boxes should do it for me. The woman who introduced me to it lost 60lbs and carried around a picture of the box in her cellular phone, it was everything she said it would be. i love it. I also walk 20 mins every other day because I hate to exercise.

I would have to say to anyone that says you can eat 500 calories a day and still lose weight that that is not true if you take high doses of insulin for diabetes. Trust me I have tried it. I have never tried the Hcg diet but I am certainly going to check it out thoroughly and see if it is something I can use. As for the doubting Thomas' out there, don't knock what works for people. In a time when the Fat people of the world are public enemy #1 if this helps people lose weight safely and keep it off then more power to them and God Bless them. As for being wrought with nutritional deficiencies due to low caloric intake, you get the same exact thing with bariatric surgery. You have to take supplements the rest of your life and you lose weight due to extremely limited caloric intake.. so how can one be any worse than the other?

I am part of a local team administrating this program in the Puget sound area, I have also tried the program myself. What we have learned from many patients and many pounds lost is that sticking to the original protocol while building life long nutrition habits makes for a huge short term impact (up to one pound a day) and also for a sustainable long term change. If you have more questions or thoughts about the protocol go to www.anatbarak.com or www.drdenel.com

Many folks seem to be very confused. Anecdotal evidence (i.e. testamonials) is very unreliable. Furthermore, I would suggest that the data indicates that the HCG diet DOES work--it just works no better than a placebo. I agree "the proof is in the results," and the results of several studies indicate objectively that the treatments are worthless. The power of suggestion is very powerful. If you believe it will work, it will. Furthermore, Bazelori obviously has a vested interest in promoting the product. Although I don't wish to engage in an ad hominem argument, I submit that anyone who sells the product might be biased. For reliable information on how to separate truth from fiction--which can be very difficult to distinguish sometimes--I recommend the following website: http://www.quackwatch.org/ Education is our only defense against this kind of chicanery Yacman

I am a firm believer in HCG for weight loss. My good friend from Texas turned me onto it. She did the cream treatments with Dr True himself last year! I was VERY SKEPTICAL when she first told me about it. After seeing and hearing her success....I was intrigued enough to do some research. Due to limited funds, I decided to try the homeopathic oral drops. I had the same incredible results that she did with the cream. I lost 25 lbs in six weeks and another 7 after I went off the drops. I am thrilled to be wearing a size 2 jeans and have never felt better. My cholestrol has dropped 30 points and my triglyceride levels have been cut in half. I have done every diet out there....nothing has been this fast, convenient and AFFORDABLE. My friend in Texas had her husband buy the drops from us since my husband is now a distributor. He lost 30 lbs in 21 days. Naysayers say what you will....it works. Visit www.hcg-123.com for more info!

All I can say is DON"T believe the double blind study..maybe those doing the study were doubly blind!!! Want the straight skinny from many who have done the procedure, lost amazing amounts of weight, retained the loss (as said in another post---if you go back to the way you ate before then insanity is in operation. Insanity =s doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Anyhow, want the truth from the many who are and have had great success with HCG protocol? Check out www.happilythinnerafter.com Then decide if it is for you. This is personal decision. But "the proof is in the results".

Dr. Cummings is correct. A simple simple search of Medline Pubmed (which indexes the scientific literature) indicates that double blind placebo controlled studies show no benefit of HCG in weight loss. Anyone who restricts their caloric intake to 500 calories per day will lose weight. For example: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2405506?itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum&ordinalpos=3 Anyone taking money from patients, including Dr. True (ironic name), is behaving unethically. Thank goodness we have this wonderful tool called "science," which helps to expose the charlatans. Furthermore, anyone who promotes homeopathic treatment (including many naturopaths) is guilty of fraud. Yacman

stop taking the hormone and eat 500 calories a day and see what happens. Yet again, another quick fix. Don't people get it?!?!? I have seen people bounce right back to their starting weight in a matter of weeks after stopping taking this hormone.

I have to say I was one of the biggest skeptics...but then I had a friend go on a program through a natropath...after I saw her success and still being healthy, I decided to give it a try. I can recall being pregnant and a little chuncky (less than I am now, actually..I never "ate for two") and through my whole pregnancy, I saw my fat stores get smaller...so I thought maybe this can work. (and I know of course anyone eating 500 cals a day would lose weight).... What I can tell you is that I am not feeling like I am hungry or starving..down about 12 lbs already...I probably eat a little more than 500 cals, but I can say I get fuller quicker...I don't feel like this is as much work as my previous stints with other programs. It is a tool and program and as with any other weightloss program/system/method-it isn't meant for everyone...that is why there is a variety in life; for those it works for, good for us!

This diet is AMAZING! I lost 40 lbs in 3 months. What this article doesn't mention is that the HCG diet has been in effect for 56 years. Dr. A.W. Simeons published his works in 1954 and when in Rome, he had celebrities and royalty come to his estate for a "spa". 30 Days later they were 25 lbs lighter. There are NO side effects, unless you call weight loss a "side effect". :-) I believe there is ONE stipulation - if you have kidney problems, this might not be right for you. http://hcgdietinfo.com/HCG_Diet_Dr_Simeons_Manuscript.htm The above link has information from A-Z about this diet. For those "do-it-yourselfers", I use www.pharmacyescrow.ca It's a Canadian online pharmacy - I've gotten my HUCOG 5000 iu HCG from India 3 times and have had wonderful results. I suggest the 23 day protocol - even if you have more than 15 lbs to lose - give your body a chance to re-coop :-)

I have successfully lost 75 lbs. using HHCG. It is unfortunate that when doing a story that can be of use to so many folks who have struggled for decades with overweight/obesity that you didn't do more research. I started August 2009..and the way the protocol is set up I have been on the 500 protocol and HCG for a total of 120 days. Not enough room to explain how the different phases dovetail together to create a means to lifelong weight loss. I still have 40 lbs. to lose..which I will accomplish with HCG. I was a candidate for lap band or stapling surgery. But I was scared as I have watched dear friends and their struggle over the years..I was so thankful when I was introduced to HCG. I have NEVER been hungry. It works. My hardest struggle has been with the head hunger..not real hunger. As I was a food addict..food was my drug of choice. I would encourage anyone who struggles with losing weight to research HCG starting with Dr. Simeon's (the MD who discovered) manuscript.

Well I too tried traditional ways to loose weight for years...and after seeing a friend lose 30 plus lbs I decided to give Releana a try....so 37lbs later I am a true believer in this program. I was monitored by a naturalpath who diagnosed thyroid issues had no clue about since mainstream medicine have unrealistic ranges when testing for thyroid problems. Also, I probably would have thought it crazy had I not witnessed someone elses sucess . It truly worked for me and subsequently is working for several other people who have seen my sucess! All I can say is I LOVE HCG!!! Best thing I ever did for myself cuz I feel great being able to give myself a pedicure (if I wanted to)!!!

I am a little confused on how Dr. Cummings can say this is worthless when I (like many others) have lost weight on it. Usually if someone doesn't lose weight it is because they didn't stick to it. I have tried every diet under the sun and could not lose weight due to a thyroid problem and this worked, I have lost 26lbs. Dr. Cummings also said that anyone would lose if they were eating a 500 calorie diet; well that is simply not true (at least initially.) If you were only eating 500 calories and not taking the shot your body would go into starvation mode thus store fat and put on weight. Furthermore, every Dr. that I know that prescribes this diet also has the patient take vitamins so they aren't deficient. Yes, it is hard when everyone else is enjoying a glass of wine or eating that piece of birthday cake; however, that is true for any diet. This is not something you stay on forever but it is a good kickstart helps you learn to eat right for a healthy lifestyle in the future.
