Oxygen is giving Valerie Walker a drug-free way to stop cluster headaches, which otherwise would last anywhere from 15 minutes to three hours.

"Cluster headache for me is on one side of the head and it's usually a very piercing, stabbing pain in the eye area," she said.

"Our study showed for the first time a clear difference between oxygen and air in the treatment of acute cluster headache. It was properly powered, randomized and placebo controlled and really provides evidence for the use of oxygen in cluster headache," said Peter J. Goadsby, M.D., Ph.D. University of California, San Francisco.

Dr. Goadsby and his international co-authors followed 76 British patients from 2002 to 2007, treating them for cluster headaches, using either air or oxygen. Those given oxygen were most likely to be pain free after 15 minutes of treatment.

Twenty percent of attacks were improved on placebo which is air and 78 percent of attacks were improved on oxygen, a clear difference in favor of oxygen," said Dr. Goadsby.

"It means the difference between being in pain for most of the day for me instead of just being in pain for short bouts throughout the day," said Valerie.

"This study is important because it offers patients with cluster headache a safe, effective treatment that they can use on multiple occasions that will give them good pain relief for their appalling headaches," said Dr. Goadsby.

Not only did the oxygen help stop the pain, it also relieved other symptoms including, eye watering, swelling and redness.

The study appears in this week's Journal of the American Medical Association.

I have had cluster headaches since 1992, I am a 32 and female. I wasn't diagnosed until 2004 and have used O2 since. I think the 26 yr old female needs to go to clusterheadaches.com like clusterheades above said, you will find all the support and direction from thousands of cluster headache suffers all over the world. There are a few who use LSD successfully. And a few from seattle who can help you find a sympathetic doctor who can get you O2 prescribed. Don't let Clusters control you, control the clusters!!! I'll see you there. angela.lambert

High flow oxygen works wonders for most people who have tried it. The earlier you catch the attack the better (and faster) it works. Having a quality delivery system (regulator and mask) also makes a huge difference. m_wichmann421, you should be able to see your physician and get a prescription for oxygen. If they know anything about CH, they'll know it is quickly becoming the preferred method for aborting the acute attack. As for LSD, there has been A LOT of research recently about the positive effects of LSD and Psilocybin as a treatment for Cluster Headaches. The National Geographic Channel recently ran a segment entitled "Inside LSD" highlighting the new research. Try typing "LSD for cluster headaches" into Google and prepare to spend hours reading articles like this: http://www.neurology.org/cgi/content/abstract/66/12/1920 And, while you're at it, check out our online community of over 7,000 cluster headache sufferers: http://www.clusterheadaches.com :)

Yes, because you've ever heard of people with headaches taking LSD.....Where did that even come from, nothing intelligent to contribute?

Not old news to me, I've been to four different doctors including a nueurologist who knew nothing (ive had CH for 5 years now) and put me on so many drugs that did nothing I gave up and deal with them on my own. I'm female and 26, news like this makes me want to cry, but how would one go about getting oxygen prescribed???
