NEW YORK -- Snickers bars may soon satisfy you a bit less.

Mars Inc., the makers of popular candy brands including M&M's and Twix, will stop making chocolate products that exceed 250 calories by the end of next year.

That means king-sized versions of the company's chocolate bars will disappear from candy aisles. The privately-held company also makes Milky Way, 3Musketeers, Bounty and Kudos bars.

Mars may not have to make radical changes to reach its goal, however; a standard Snickers bar currently has 280 calories. A package of Twix and a bag of peanut M&M's each clock in at 250 calories.

The company first posted the goal on its website in September of last year, but the plans got renewed attention after media organizations reported on it this week.

Representatives from Mars declined to provide further details Thursday, noting that it has not yet finalized how it will reach its caloric goals.  But the company said in an emailed statement that it has shown a "broad -based commitment to health and nutrition" in recent years.

In 2007, for example, Mars  said it would no longer buy advertising space or time if more than a quarter of the audience was likely to be younger than 12. The company also noted that it has introduced several new products that are less than 200 calories.

And by 2015, the company plans to reduce sodium levels in all its food products by 25 percent.

Mars, based in McLean, Va., also owns Uncle Ben's, Seeds of Change and Whiskas pet food.

Just an excuse to make smaller candy bars and still charge the same money. Clever health conscious "spin" that make them look good though. As always, the decision is profit driven, not health.

Want to lose weight, then only eat one meal a day. Unless you actually work maunal labor for a living that is. Americans no longer need 3 meals a day, with what most do for a living. Which is sit in front of a computer. I've always been skinny and contribute that to only eating in the evenings when I get home from work. Not only keeps me skinny, but with everything that is put in food, I'm only poisoning myself once a day.

Could it be that the "king size" bars are being priced out? The regular sized bars now sell for $.89 to $.99. Remember the old days when they were just $.50? The "king size" bars used to sell for $1.00. Bet they can't bring themselves to sell them for $2.00 or more...

What about the bags of minis or fun size? I know I've opened up a bag only to eat more than what equates to one king sized. But I go to the gym every day, don't "drink" my calories, etc. Whoever thought of this at Mars, they should give him a huge bonus. Win-win for them. Receiving praise from the self-rightous media, gov't, and individuals who think they have the right to tell us what we can eat, and the profit they'll make by charging the same for less product. Well, I'm headed off to eat 400 calories of garbage just because this article put me in a *issy mood.

obesity is a complex issue, one that can however be distilled down to ONE EQUATION: do not consume more calories than you burn. Obesity is also a moral issue: gluttony and greed play a role here. Obesity can be a medical issue: Osteoarthritis of various joints can prevent exercise. But in the end, it still comes down to the equation: Do not eat more than you burn.

This is because everyone in America is fat and companies have no choice but to do something about it. No one believes in riding their bike 15 minutes to work and back, or doing other simple exercise, or not eating McDonald's and Burger King 4 days a week, or drinking water instead of 6 or 7 sodas a day (seeing fat women with a cart full of diet Pepsi is VERY annoying, by the way). America has to be big fat slobs, and that's one of the big reasons why everyone is downsizing and eliminating things such as these candy bars. Oh, and that's why you have things like "600 calories and under" on the Applebee's menu and so much nutritional information out there. Everyone is overweight and they don't do anything about it. It's disgusting.

ANY candy - local, organic, or fair trade - if not eaten in moderation, is bad for you. I rarely buy candy anyway and I darn sure don't buy these mega sizes that are available. Glad to see they're making a choice to downsize their product. So many won't.

What a brilliant marketing move! Make them smaller so people will buy two instead of one. More profit Brilliant. I am suprised the government did not mandate this. We need to be protected from ourselves. Our country has become a orld ide joke and example of gluttony, excess and lack of self control. A country of greedy people that are entitled to everything they have. World hunger website is reporting that 925 million were malnourished in the world in 2010. The world looks at our country and sees the following: 1. 1/3 of all Americans are overweight. 2. 1/3 of all Americans are morbidly obese. (2/3 of Americans are overweight) 3. Hundreds of thousands of people had weight loss surgery last year. Man 925 million people must have a very high opinion of America right now. It is not Mars. Inc or McDonald's fault. They give people what they want. Instead government should mandate vigorous exercise in our public schools instead of allowing moldy applesauce.

Good for them. It's good to see businesses make those sorts of decisions on their own.

If a standard size Snickers is already 280 and they reduce that, I guess that means we will be spending the same money for less product again...

Sorry beetle, but milk and meat are good for you. A candy bar once in a while might also help you lighten up a bit. (OK, maybe not size wise, but stress wise.) Snake, you're funny. As long as the cheapest food is the worst quality, the poorer of us will be fat and unhealthy. If we tax bad food, who do you think that burden will fall on, the rich?

I'm happy to see a company do this because they WANT to and not because there is a law making them.

Nobody is forcing anyone to eat candy bars, it's a choice, all the over weight people know they have a problem, they need will power. The companies shouldn't get taxed or have to change, people need to change.

Many products have way to much sodium. More sodium that you dont even know that its sodium. Look at the preservatives, some you cant even pronouce. For examples of sodium levels, a serving size of 1/2 cup has 200 mg in corn flakes, rice krispies has like 250 mg per serving ( 1/2 cup) The only cereal that doesnt is Shredded Wheat which tastes like cardboard or the box that the cereal came in. The average can of chili has 1150 mg per serving and the can has between 2-3 servings. Thats a minimum of 2300 mg of sodium per can, max would be close to 3400 mg. How many people can eat 1/4 of the can or 4.5 ounces and be satisfied with that/? Salt comes in many different names. Sodium is a killer.

This is great, if only I could buy a 12 oz can of Coke at the store, I can still stay skinny (I just drink water instead usually since I don't want that many calories of a 20 oz). In Europe, 200 or 250ml servings are common at bars/cafes.... I am just saying.

Any food that you can't pay sales tax on should have a calorie tax. A penny a calorie per listed serving. If someone wants to buy a 280 calorie snickers bar, they'll be paying over 3 bucks for that bar. That will get some of us fat folk slimming down real quick.
