SEATTLE - It's important to keep close tabs on your health. That's why KING 5 is teaming up with the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance to provide no-cost mammograms for women who don't have health insurance.

It's been several years since Glenys Winder has had a mammogram, so she jumped at the opportunity to get  one inside the Seattle Cancer Aare Alliance's mammovan.

"My husband is self-employed. In summer time and in between jobs we just don't have insurance and it takes a while before we get insurance back," she said.

Winder is one of many taking advantage of a two day blitz of no-cost mammograms being sponsored by king-5 and the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance.

Mammograms are the number one tool in the early detection of breast cancer, yet it remains a procedure many women skip, either due to cost or concern about discomfort.

Doctor Connie Lehman is the director of imaging at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. This week, she underwent her annual mammogram in the roving office to show just how simple it is.

"It's a little bit of mild discomfort with the pulling and the pressure, but it's absolutely not painful. I would much rather have this than go to the dentist by a long shot," said Lehman.

Winder says she's never experienced discomfort with her mammograms, and says all she's feeling now is relief to be getting one without having to worry about how she'll pay for it.

"I have two aging parents that I've been taking care of and ignored my health.  And so this is, like I said, a great opportunity," said Winder.

On Thursday, Oct. 29, the mammovan will be outside the Safeway on 7300 Roosevelt Way Northeast, between 8 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. To find out if you're eligible for a no-cost mammogram or to schedule an appointment, call 206-288-7800 or CLICK HERE.
