A new study suggests bacteria can linger for days on airplane surfaces.

Researchers at Auburn University in Alabama tested how long E.coli and MRSA could live on things like armrests, tray tables, toilet handles window shades and seat pockets. They found that MRSA germs survived for a week and E.coli lived for about 96 hours.

Doctors say the biggest health threat while traveling comes from cold and flu viruses. The best defense: simple hand hygiene.

The findings of the study were presented at the American Society for Microbiology's annual meeting.
