A new study finds women with early stage breast cancer who undergo a lumpectomy are more likely to survive than those who opt for a mastectomy, according to researchers at Duke University Medical Center.
Researchers studied more than $100,000 women diagnosed with stage one or stage two breast cancer. They found those treated with a lumpectomy and radiation were more likely to survive than those who had a mastectomy, regardless of their age or cancer type.
A lumpectomy is significantly less invasive than a mastectomy, where the entire breast is removed.
