Fatty foods may cause brain damage, UW study says

SEATTLE - At All Star Fitness in West Seattle, we heard a New Year's resolution or two.

"I'd like to lose ten pounds that's the hardest part,” said Lori Arnold.

We also heard a few theories on what to stay away from to lose those pounds.

“I believe wheat has been so genetically modified, it's just not very good for you, not good for most people,” said David Webber.

But the latest news on nutrition comes from a study out of the University of Washington Medicine research facility. What you eat impacts more than your waist line.

“If you eat a lot of fatty foods there's a rapid damage response that occurs in the brain,” said Joshua Thaler, Study Lead Investigator

Specifically, eating fatty foods kills the neurons that tell you when you're full, and Thaler says since they no longer give the signal to stop eating, body weight tends to drift up and you tend to gain weight.

To be fair, researchers say the majority of this study centered around rodents, so they're not sure how applicable this is to humans.

"There is a new idea here about how obesity will occur and why people find it so difficult to lose weight and maintain it,” said Thaler.

The next step in the research will look at whether the brain damage is reversible.

It's the bun and the chips that will make you fat. Eating carbs raises blood sugar, then insulin rises and signals body to store the excess sugar in fat cells. When a person limits carbs, the body very quickly normalizes and burns fat as the primary fuel. It's the best path to a healthy body AND brain.

jesus christ people, what the hell? You act like the government is trying to put you in concentration camps for eating fatty foods. Geez, all UW is saying is eating fatty foods can cause brain damage. I would rather have that information than not. I know eating fatty foods makes you fat, but it's also nice to have another reason to eat better. Quit whining! If you want to stay fat and dumb than don't change anything but if you want to be a little healther and smarter, than reduce the fatty foods. Pretty simple.

First off, the conclusion would be false. I know I eat fatty foods but I also know when I am full just fine thanks. And I am not an F-ing rat. From what is posted here on the study, it sound more like a few health nut students are out to prove something that they believe is true and not actually being objective in the manner.

Yeah, uservenge, we should all eat like as evolution determined was best for us - but living in gypsum crates, working in cubicles and spending a couple-three hours a day breathing CO & HCs in a plastic & steel box ain't natural either, what's your solution to THAT, re-education camps? This research is as meaningless as the old THC research in the 60s & 50s - when it turned out the drugs they used to kill the rats did all the damage to their brains. Still & all, nobody wants to pay for someone else' healthcare, so banning fatty food (using the same rationale as mandatory helmet laws) would be one way to achieve greater "Personal Responsibility". When they make normal recreational drugs difficult to get, kids start snorting pixie stix - wonder what food junkies will resort to if burgers and fries are outlawed...

what fatty foods did they feed them? also rats =/= humans. ice cream is a fatty food but its full of sugar. which most research says is the real cause of most issues regarding heart health and weight, its just not endorsed by companies that profit from selling "whole wheat or health foods" i guess ancient humans were starving all the time since the vast majority of ancient man's diet was a fresh animal kill, with maybe a few berries. i mean come on people.. its common sense. why would humans be THE ONLY animal on the planet that hates what its natural food is. what do humans want to eat that is natural salty, sweet, fatty salty and fatty foods are meat... sweet in the natural world is fruit and veggies... that's all we should be eating no cooking oil no fake butter no chemicals no hormones

the guy that said "wheat" is the one that is right. what kind of fat did they feed the rats? there is good fat and bad. if it was corn oil, then, yes, very bad! they show candy and Doritos and say the fat did it - what about the Sugar and Carbs? do a study on that and you may have something.

The research has it backwards. Only brain damaged people like fatty foods.

There is a difference between fatty foods and fattening foods that they always get confused. The fatty part is the meat and cheese, the more deleterious part is fattening and that is the bun and the corn chips. When I started leaving the bun and chips and just eating the meat and cheese my diabetes went away.

So if a person eats fatty foods it causes brain damage to the part of the tell you when you are full. Next step in research to see if the brain damage is reversible. I call BS & would say people are looking to seek large sums of money under false pretence. Are these the same type of expert researchers that spend millions on studying effects of cow burbs on the environment?
