New research suggests that long-term Type 2 diabetes may be linked to a loss in brain tissue.

In the study, published in the journal Radiology, researchers analyzed MRI scans to evaluate the brain structure of more than 600 patients with Type 2 diabetes.

Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania found that those who had diabetes the longest had more loss of the grey matter tissue involved in memory, emotions, decision making and self control. In fact, for each decade a patient had diabetes, their brain looked about two years older than a brain of a non-diabetic.
