Nearly 5 million Americans have chronic hepatitis, and believe it or not, many don't know it because they don't show symptoms. Now a new study shows customers in nail salons could be putting themselves at risk for the deadly disease.

Nancye Swanson does her own nails these days. Six months ago, she almost died from Hepatitis B, a serious liver infection, which doctors say she picked up at a salon.

"It felt like the flu," she said.

Her skin turned yellow, a symptom of Hepatitis B. It happened while she was getting a pedicure.

"A lot of these places use sharp instruments and they could be reusing those," said Dr. Robert Gish, a clinical professor at University of California San Diego.

Dr. Gish is writing a health policy for the Vietnamese government on the spread of Hepatitis B. That's because anyone born in the Asian Pacific region is at a high risk of already having it. That includes the thousands of people working in salons across the U.S. --and they may not even know it.

"Ninety-five percent of people with Hepatitis B have no symptoms," said Dr. Gish. "That's the problem."

While there is no cure, Nancye takes a pill once a day to control it.

"I cannot believe I was that close to death," she said.

To protect yourself, the Hepatitis B foundation recommends:

  • Bringing your own tools since disinfectants may not be 100 percent effective
  • If you have cuts, bug bites or a skin infection -- reschedule the appointment
  • Don't shave your legs before a pedicure since that increases your risk of infection
  • Ask how often footbaths are disinfected

It's not just nail salons to watch out for. Anyplace where you can get tattoos, ear piercing, body piercing, even barbershops, can put you at risk for Hepatitis B, according to Dr. Gish.

There is a Hepatitis B vaccine available which has been routinely given to infants since 1991. It's now recommended that adults who are at high-risk be immunized so check with your doctor.

Sorry, call me a bigot! I believe Dateline did an undercover investigation, maye 20/20 several years ago about he nail and toe salons that are not steralizing their instruments according to regulations..Rubbing alcohol is not a true disinfectant..There are special types of disinfectants that need to be used to completely steralize and kill any germs from previous use.. No, you are no better off in Bellevue, Issaquah than you are in Burien or White Center..The majority of these salons are run by Asians..No problemo..But, each one the investigators went to could hardly communicate and understand what was trying to be explained to them about their insufficient steralization procedures..I'm sure it isn't just the Asians but they seem to be the majority when it comes to these particular salons..Not to say, it couldn't happen elsewhere. @hewoo..I bet your wife paid for this special kit that was dedicated only for her use!! I have my own kit that I purchased for only my personal use.

Along with Islandnailgirls comments, please be an informed consumer, stop patronizing any kind of salon that isn't following safety regulations and always check the licensing. Also double check that the picture on the license is the person performing the service. Anyone concerned about a particular salon or technician can to go www.dol.wa.gov to check the status of the shop license as well as the individual. The website also has a section "Resources and publications" that has safety tips as well as a list of what to look for, etc.

When my wife went to nail salons in Oregon, she always came home with her own little packet of emery boards and toe spreaders and stuff that she was given and supposed to bring back next time....here in Redmond, not so. @Islandnailgirl, talk to me. What's the difference.

Are we better off getting a manicure in Bellevue or issaquah as opposed to, say, Burien, Renton, or Beacon Hill?

Please be careful with stories like this.... I own a nail salon. In Washington state it is illegal for manicurists to use implements a client has brought in. Reputable nail salons are perfectly safe to visit. Implements that have been properly cleaned with hot water and soap, and soaked in Barbicide are safe to be used on clients. Foot tubs that are properly disinfected, or ones that have disposable liners are safe. It is true that clients with open injuries should not be worked on, and we do recommend not shaving right before a pedicure. But please, some of us work very hard to follow the state laws and stories like this damage our reputation as well. You do need to be careful in choosing your nail salon, ask questions, observe, look for licenses. Look or ask for the latest inspection results. We are required to display them, and are inspected every two years.
