Antibiotics can help us fight infections. But there's a new study done by a Seattle doctor that looks at the long-term effects of antibiotic use in childhood. KING 5's Dr. Wendy Sue Swanson discusses. You can also read her blog on this issue.

What parents can do

  • Antibiotics are given frequently (1 out of 5 visits). Ask WHY they are needed.
  • Ask the prescribing doctor if treatment alternatives exist.
  • No antibacterial soap at home. Don't treat yourself or kids with old antibiotics in the cupboard.
  • If your child goes on antibiotics, consider using "probiotics" to help keep good bacteria around
