Rainer Summers and Adrienne Gratton
Adrienne and Rainer were our first couple you selected to win our "Wedding of Your Dreams" contest in Spring of 2001. They were married on a Waterways Cruise last June. Here is their story which originally aired on Evening Magazine in May, 2001:
This couple brings a whole new meaning to the phrase "Sodo Mojo."
When Adrienne Gratton and Rainer Summers walk down the aisle, it'll be the culmination of a romance that began with a baseball at a Mariners game.
"This is the foul ball that Glen Allen Hill hit over into our section and we scrambled for it, and I ended up getting it," says Rainer.
"I could have gotten it, I let him have it," Adrienne giggled.
Rainer gave the baseball to the attractive woman sitting in front of him. Adrienne then gave the ball to her father, who is in the hospital battling leukemia.
She used the card that came with the ball to track Rainer and thank him via e-mail. And she discovered she had something in common with the foul-ball catcher – it turned out his father also was in the hospital.
The two started seeing each other, their dates alternating between visiting hospitals to take care of their fathers and visits to Safeco Field to nurture their relationship.
"I love coming here. You first walk in and see the field, especially if the roof's open and you see the sun on the field, and the smells, and the fans walking around… and it's great," says Adrienne enthusiastically.
Facing their fathers' illnesses established this couple's bond, and forgetting their troubles at the ballfield helped cement it.
"I think one of the things that has brought us closer to together is just going to the baseball games," said Rainer.
Rainer proposed to Adrienne aboard a ferry. The relationship that started with a foul ball became a home run.
