Seahawks got their start in Miami

The Miami Seahawks were the first team to use the nautical name.

MIAMI, FLA. - Miami, Florida, home of the… Seahawks?

To explain the origins of the Seahawks name, we've come here, to a place you might not have expected.  Miami, Florida.

We all know the Seahawks got their start in the Kingdome back in 1976, right?  Well, sort of.

See, World War II had just ended.  Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was in town for some rest and relaxation. Art deco and debutantes made South Beach a scene.  And this oceanfront city was finally getting its first pro team.  One with a fitting nautical name, the Miami Seahawks.

They played in the brand-new All-American Football Conference. And they played poorly... winning only three games that season under two different head coaches.

By the time the national championship game rolled around, the Miami Seahawks had already played their last game in history.  The team disbanded after the first season.

Seattle happened more than 30 years later, when the name Seahawks was chosen from more than 17-hundred suggestions as the moniker for our new NFL team.

The Seahawks… Forgotten in Miami, but forever true and blue in their proud Northwest home.

So the Seahawks left Miami after just one season.  But they would be reborn as the original Baltimore Colts
