Day in the life of a 911 call operator

Kim Styler from King County 911 takes us through a day in the life of a Emergency operator.

RENTON, WASH. - Nearly two million 9-1-1 calls are made in King County every year - that's one for every resident. These calls are routed to the twelve 9-1-1 centers that answer 9-1-1 calls for the police and fire agencies in King County

The Enhanced 9-1-1 (E-911) Program Office administers the emergency 9-1-1 telephone system in King County in partnership with the 12 call centers in King County, to help provide quick and professional 9-1-1 service to the entire county, including all cities and unincorporated areas.

King County is dedicated to educating the public about the purpose and proper use of 9-1-1.

Know your location when calling 9-1-1. One of the first things you will be asked if you call 9-1-1  is "What's Your Location?" Awareness of your surroundings, such as street names, landmarks, and mile markers, can be helpful in identifying your location.

Call 9-1-1 only if you need an emergency response from police, fire, or medics. Just because you need help doesn't mean you need 9-1-1.

One in five calls to 9-1-1 are accidental. Pocket dialing, purse/bag dialing, and kids playing with phones all can cause big problems for 9-1-1 centers. Time and resources are wasted on accidental calls and hang-ups. If you accidentally call 9-1-1, do not hang up until you have explained to the 9-1-1 call receiver that it was an accident.
