Finding common ground at peace camp

08/16/2002

By MIMI JUNG / KING 5 News

SEATTLE – The hope for peace in the Middle East stretches all the way to Western Washington. A group of children spent the past week discovering how peace can make a difference in a world of conflict.

You see the images on TV – images of war and violence of two groups who can’t seem to find common ground – but half a world away.

They have discovered what peace really means.
There’s hope.

At a Middle East Peace Camp for Kids, you’ll find Arabs and Jews, and some who aren’t either, but for one week, it doesn’t matter.

It doesn't matter where you're from, it just matters who you are.

Through drama and song, the children are learning to unite and to understand and to accept their differences.

Each activity at the camp is connected to a symbol of peace – different pieces of glass representing different cultures coming together.

They’ve made new friends, learned a new language and discovered what peace really means.

They also know it won’t happen overnight, but there’s hope that someday these two groups will find common ground.

The peace camp went so well, organizers have already begun planning for next year.
