Threats close community colleges

09:37 PM PDT on Tuesday, April 24, 2007

Associated Press & KING5.com

YAKIMA, Wash. - Officials at Yakima Valley Community College closed the campus Tuesday because of a threat of violence.

A threatening note was found Monday afternoon in a men's bathroom on campus, prompting school officials to cancel classes and activities in Yakima the next day.

The exact nature of the threat was not disclosed, but the college received "threats of harm to people on campus" for Tuesday, Yakima police Capt. Greg Copeland said. Copeland said there were no incidents on the campus Tuesday.

"There's nobody there," Copeland said. "It's a ghost town."

Copeland said closure was understandable following the massacre at Virginia Tech that left 33 dead April 16.

"Eventually there's going to have to be some sort of line drawn," he said. "But right now, who's going to under-react given what happened at Virginia Tech?"

Mount Vernon Community College evacuated

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. - Skagit Valley College in Mount Vernon was evacuated Tuesday afternoon after the community college reported receiving a telephone call from an individual saying there was going to be a shooting on the campus.

The call was received at 3:35 p.m.

According to a news release from the Mount Vernon Police Department, the president of the college made the evacuation decision, while an officer searched the campus.

The campus continues to be closed and all evening activities have been canceled.

Detective Sergeant Mark Shipman was not immediately available to discuss the results of the campus search.

Threat closes PCC campus

PORTLAND, Ore. - Security officials closed the Rock Creek campus of Portland Community College Tuesday afternoon after a threat of violence was discovered.

The school also canceled Wednesday's classes.

A college spokeswoman said a worker found a note in a restroom that threatened violence similar to what occurred at Virginia Tech last week, when a gunman killed 32 people.

Deputies conducted a sweep of the campus just before 5 p.m. No arrests have been made.

The threat was the second in a week to close a Portland-area campus.

The Vancouver branch of Washington State University was evacuated last Tuesday because of threatening graffiti discovered in a campus restroom. That threat also referred to the killings at Virginia Tech.
