Parent to parent: Family New Year's resolutions
12:01 PM PST on Thursday, January 1, 2009
Have you made your New Year's resolution yet?
Why not make a resolution that involves the whole family?
Making a family resolution is a great way to bond - and to clarify your family values.
Start by explaining to your little one what a resolution is and then let everyone in the family offer their suggestion.

"The teachers say there's really three great categories for the child to look at. One is just the personal, what we can do for self-improvement. Another one is to look for family and friends, what we can do to help out our family and friends. And then another is school," explained Julie Ogata.
And remember, school resolutions can be fun, like mastering the jump rope or monkey bars.
The folks at Parent Map are also offering their own examples laying out nine resolutions for 2009. Here are their top 4:
- Wear your kid-colored glasses, take a step back, and try to see the world through your child's eyes.
- Practice what you preach. Really make a point of leading by example.
- Be a good "wing" parent, which means try to really support your child, rather than simply correct and criticize all the time.
- Listen to your child's voice. Remember, sometimes children "do" know best.
Family resolutions can be as ambitious as learning a foreign language together or as simple as eating dinner together once a week.
The important lesson for your child is to set a goal and achieve it. That strengthens both the family bond and your child's self-esteem.
