KING 5 and Northwest Harvest will be joined by North Middle School and a big donation of food on Friday, June 10th at the Everett Mall.

When the students and staff heard about the Summer Hunger Challenge, they rallied to get involved.

North Middle School made its debut appearance on KING 5 the morning of April 20th, the day KING 5 dedicated to spreading the message of “Rachel’s Challenge” to the community at large.

That morning, a group of students spent several hours with our own Christie Johnson, sharing some of their personal experiences about how the program is improving the atmosphere on their campus. They created a chain of paper links, each one inscribed with details of a simple act of kindness shown to a classmate, sibling, teacher or parent.

This month, the paper chain will continue to grow.

The students at North Middle School created their own campaign called “Be a Link in our Chain Reaction to Fight Summer Hunger.” Between May 26 and June 9, the school will collect non-perishable food items before breakfast and at student led conferences.  For each person who turns in food, they will add a paper link to the chain with a name or message on it.  The chain will be on display along with all the food that is raised as a powerful visual reminder of how individuals can inspire a chain reaction.
The school has reached out to the community to get involved as well and already has two partner companies on board: Durham Transportation and the Everett YWCA’s Minority Achievers Program.

All the food raised will be delivered to our Hometeam Summer Hunger Challenge collection site at the Everett Mall on Friday, June 10th.

You can watch them live or come down and join us to make a donation yourself!  We hope to see you there.

Everyone at KING 5 applauds and thanks the efforts and creativity of students and staff at North Middle School for their commitment to Rachel’s Challenge and the cause of fighting summer hunger.
