Frame Wins Civic Award for State Ferry Investigative Series “Waste on the Water”
Seattle, WA – KING 5 Investigative Reporter Susannah Frame is being honored with a Civic Award by the Municipal League of KING County for her series of “Waste on the Water” reports that uncovered millions of taxpayer dollars being wastefully spent by management at the Washington State Ferries – the largest ferry system in the United States.
The Civic Awards recognize the accomplishments of elected officials, public employees, citizen groups, the news media, and individual citizens who make outstanding contributions to the community and work to improve government. Susannah will be the recipient of the 2011 Civic Award for Government News Reporting at the Municipal League’s 52nd Annual Civic Awards Celebration Dinner on March 31st.
“The great thing about Susannah’s investigative series into our state ferry system is that changes have already taken effect to put an end to wasteful spending”, said Mark Ginther, Executive News Director of KING 5 News. “You won’t find an investigative team in the nation that works as hard or is as dedicated to the belief that journalists can make a difference in the community they belong to.”
As a result of Susannah’s “Waste on the Water” investigation, state leaders and the Governor have implemented and are continuing to look at reforms to erase the systemic wasteful spending at the Washington State Department of Transportation Ferry system. Some of the reforms include the hiring of a deputy director to hold managers more accountable, assembling an expert panel to review operations and make recommendations, ordering an agency-wide audit by the State Auditor’s Office, implementing an overtime policy, and freezing fare increases until reviews are completed.
KING 5 received a 2011 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award for excellence in broadcast journalism for the “Waste on the Water” series.
