Seattle, WA – KING 5 was honored with 70 Emmy nominations in 41 categories from the Northwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS). The nominations were announced Thursday, April 14th at the Emmy All Stars. KING 5 received more nominations than their Seattle/Tacoma competitors KOMO (52); KIRO (19); and KCPQ (7).
KING 5 received nominations for overall station excellence, best newscasts for KING 5 News at 5 PM and KING 5 Morning News during the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games, community service for Home Team Harvest and promotion.
KING 5 news garnered the majority of station nominations. Those categories include investigative news (2), breaking news, spot news (4), team coverage, news series (2), general assignment reporting (6) and continuing coverage. The KING 5 Investigators received nominations for the nationally award-winning stories “Waste on the Water” probing the state ferry system, an investigation into massive welfare fraud and another investigating suburban sweatshops.
In addition, KING 5 received nominations in the categories of environmental coverage, health/science news (2), crime news, and feature news reporting (3). And five of the six nominations for news writing as well as three news photography nominations go to KING 5. Three KING 5 produced programs are also up for an award: news (Mount St. Helens: 30 Years Later), information (Beyond the Forecast: Aviation Weather), and Health/Science (Behind the Mask). KING 5’s public affairs program Up Front with Robert Mak earned two nominations with anchor/reporter Robert Mak and producer Mike Cate receiving an additional nomination for KING 5 Ad Watch.
Individual nomination honors go to KING 5 news anchor Jean Enersen and weekend sports anchor Chris Egan.
KING 5’s extensive local programming department which includes Evening Magazine and the one-year-old New Day Northwest also captured multiple nominations.
Evening Magazine won 13 nominations overall, including feature stories in categories of human interest, arts/entertainment, historical/cultural, informational, and sports. Evening Magazine host Meeghan Black and reporter Kim Holcomb also received nominations. New Day Northwest was nominated for excellence in the interview/discussion program category.
KING 5 also received a nomination for community service for its Home Team Harvest food drive and another in the promotion category for the launch spot of the Promise image campaign.
NWCN, the 24-hour regional news and weather network also received two Emmy nominations - Shaniqua Manning’s Back to School Special and Ed Muir’s Northwest Postcards. NWCN is headquartered in Seattle.
The 48th Annual Emmy Awards Banquet is Saturday, June 11th at Snoqualmie Casino. As part of the awards ceremony, long time KING 5 news photojournalist Ken Jones will be inducted into the NATAS Silver Circle.
The Northwest Chapter of NATAS, one of twenty affiliates of the National Academy, represents television professionals in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska and Montana.
