News, Programming, Social Engagement and a high school prom highlight a memorable May
SEATTLE, May 23, 2014 – Following a dynamic month of May ratings; the numbers show that KING 5 is once again the dominant local content provider in Western Washington.
“We couldn’t feel better about the work produced by our news and programming departments,” said Ray Heacox, President and General Manager of KING 5. “The quality and volume of content being generated by our local journalists is second to no other news outlet in the region. This month, viewers confirmed that effort by making KING 5 their first choice for local news across broadcast, digital and social platforms.”
KING 5 News is #1 in overall viewers at 4:30 a.m., 5 a.m., 6 a.m., 5 p.m., 6:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., with the hour of news produced from 6:30-7:30pm drawing the highest ratings points of any newscast in the market. The success of the time period is capped by staggering growth at 7:30 p.m. with KING 5’s revamped Evening Magazine, up 90% from May 2013.
“Team Evening utilized our ensemble reporting team to cover all corners of Western Washington in our Best NW Escapes series. Kim, Saint, Jim, and Michael brought viewers to new destinations and uncovered real estate only seen in dreams. We topped off May with a night to remember, from the prom that was miraculously saved for Darrington High School, by KING 5’s own Jesse Jones.” Mark Erskine, Evening Executive Producer.
Memorable moments from the month of May include three trips to our nation’s Capitol, when KING 5 Chief Meteorologist Jeff Renner interviewed the Commander in Chief. When our Peabody Winning Investigative team interviewed members of Congress on the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, and when Sports Director Paul Silvi and Morning Anchor Joyce Taylor joined the Seahawks for their championship celebration at the White House.
New Day Northwest’s one-hour marijuana special, “Pot in WA: It’s Legal, Now What?” broke new ground for the show, taking on the hot topic for an in-depth hour that won its time period.
These moments were captured on TV and online, inspiring massive user engagement on our digital and social platforms. Thanks to a tireless team of journalists, KING 5 has created a social-media culture that permeates every floor in the building and every department in the company.
In a letter to staff, KING 5 Executive News Director Mark Ginther humbly recognized his team, “You each work to make this newsroom the best in the country every day, not just during ratings periods. Thank you.”
Congratulations Home Team, for a job well done!
