Seattle, WA – KING 5 News has the best television photojournalist team in the United States as judged by the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA). The NPPA selected KING 5 over finalists in Baltimore, Dallas, Denver, Minneapolis, and Nashville. In reviewing the award entry judges called the work “stellar” and cited coverage of spot news as well as inspiring storytelling. KING 5 last won the NPPA Large Market Station of the Year in 1981.
“This is a tremendous staff that’s really committed to great video storytelling.” said Mark Ginther, Executive News Director of KING 5, KONG 6/16, and NWCN. “Having our peers recognize our work as best in the nation only makes that commitment stronger.”
“In this day and age of instant gratification, it is nice to see a group care so much about detail”, said NPPA judge Steve Rhodes. Judge Darren Brown called the work “stellar” and said the large numbers of stories included in the entry “showed confidence in the staff.” And Judge Rob Rhodes called out KING 5 News photographers and reporters for creating “inspiring storytelling.”
In addition to the Station of the Year award, the NPAA honored the following photographers in national and/or regional competitions:
- Douglas Burgess and Scott Jenson were finalists for photographer of the year.
- Burgess and Ron Sanford finished in a first place tie for the 2010 West General photographer of the year, with the tie-breaking win going to Burgess.
- Matt Mrozinski finished in second place in the national photographer of the year category for his work at WAVY-TV in Portsmouth, Virginia. He also placed second in the NPPA’s East Top region. (Matt joined KING 5 at the end of 2010.)
- Photographers Pete Cassam, Ryan Coe, Steve Douglas, Carolyn Hall, Scott Jensen and Adam Tischler placed in the top 17 of the regional clip competition
The mission of the NPPA is dedicated to the advancement of visual journalism and works in all news media to promote its role as a vital public service. More information is available at www.nppa.org.
