Jean Enersen’s Children’s HealthLink Special Debunks Autism Myths
“The World Within: Northwest Stories of Autism”
Airing Monday, May 31st at 9:00 PM on KING 5
SEATTLE, WASH. – Scientists still don’t know what causes autism – sixty years after being identified as a disorder. And just like snowflakes, no two individuals with autism are alike. There’s a wide spectrum of behaviors surrounding autism that KING 5’s Jean Enersen explores in her Children’s HealthLink Special, “The World Within: Northwest Stories of Autism” Monday at 9:00 PM on KING 5. On one end of the spectrum is Asperger’s Disorder, a high functioning sub group of Autistic Spectrum Disorder, and on the other end of the spectrum are profoundly disabled individuals.
Jean Enersen and Dr. Bryan King, program director at Seattle Children’s Autism Center answer some questions surrounding the complexity of autism, including:
• What are the myths about autism?
• How is autism diagnosed?
• What’s it like to parent a child with autism?
• What treatments show promise?
• What are scientists doing to find a cure?
“Jean profiles the personal stories of families in our area who have a child diagnosed with autism. It’s an informative and often heart-warming look at a complex developmental disorder,” said Mark Ginther, Executive News Director of KING 5 News.
Jean co-anchors KING 5 News Monday through Friday at 5:00 PM and 6:30 PM with Dennis Bounds. She’s also KING 5’s HealthLink reporter and hosts quarterly prime time HealthLink specials in partnership with Cancer Free Washington as well as prime time Children’s HealthLink specials such as “The World Within” – all of which air on KING 5.
In 2006, Jean’s Children’s HealthLink Special: “Crown For Kathrina” won an Excellence in Media award and a Clarion award. The HealthLink Special: “Breast Cancer: Winning the Battle” also won a Clarion award and the 2004 Enersen HealthLink Special: “Love Your Heart” received a regional Emmy.
“The World Within” originally aired on KING 5 on December 29th, 2009.
