SEATTLE -- A Western Washington family has been making a difference for the Pike Market Senior Center and Downtown Foodbank for 23 years.
Lead by John Llewellyn, a West Seattle lawyer by day, the family sings in the annual "Big Fig" -- the Great Figgy Pudding street corner caroling competition.
While they sing, the Llewellyns -- the "Llew crew" -- solicit donations from the crowd, with all the money raised helping the Downtown Foodbank near the Pike Place Market, which feeds 600 families a week and where demand is up 30 percent since last year.
Over the years, the Llew Crew has raised more than $50,000 for the foodbank. "We're panhandlers in the best possible sense!," Llewellyn said.
This year, the Llew Crew tied for second in the people's choice competition. Ten thousand people turned out for the caroling event, which raised close to $80,000.
