On October 22nd, KING 5 Television welcomed Hollywood actor, James Avery into our studios to help kick-off a month long awareness campaign about diabetes.
James Avery, an actor best known for his role as Phillip Banks, the uncle of Will Smith's character on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, participated as a celebrity ambassador to the initiative. Mr. Avery, who is living with type 2 diabetes, hopes that his participation will elevate diabetes to top-of-mind status in the media and inspire stories about the real issues faced by the diabetes community.
Our month long campaign, timed to coincide with National Diabetes Month, began with an event called Picture This: DIABETES. The forum is a collaborative effort between KING 5, Novo Nordisk and the Entertainment Industries Council. Special guests include local doctors, patients, community leaders, and researchers, as well as several key members of the KING 5 staff who participated in a media panel. Together these individuals will spend several hours working to enhance dialogue among local diabetes experts, policy makers and the media with the ultimate goal of improving public awareness of the key issues associated with diabetes management.
Health Education and awareness has been a front-line initiative at KING TV for more than a decade now, led by our own Jean Enersen, and was a cause passionately supported by our founder Dorothy Bullitt nearly 60 years ago. We are proud to continue that commitment by wrapping our arms around this particular topic in concert with National Diabetes Awareness Month.
