Old Dog Haven of Arlington is one of 10 animal charities to receive a $10,000 gift from the Petco Foundation.
ODH is a network of foster homes for senior dogs age 8 and up. They also provide doggie assisted living and hospice. They do not have a traditional shelter - all of their dogs are in homes throughout Western Washington.
The nonprofit Petco Foundation has just surpassed the $100 million mark for funds raised to help animals. To celebrate the milestone, the Petco Foundation and Petco store associates selected 100 charitable partners to receive a $1,000 donation each.
Also, Petco and the Petco Foundation let pet lovers nationwide vote for 10 of the 100 charitable partners to receive an additional $10,000 each. Old Dog Haven got the third-most votes.
ODH Executive Director, Judith Piper, said they are thrilled by the gift.
"What a credit to our fantastic supporters who rallied to make us third in the Facebook voting nationwide," she said. "Our supporters are truly the best and should be VERY proud of themselves."
Piper said because most of the dogs come to them in really poor physical condition, they budget $1,000 for each dog's initial medical expenses, so the Petco Foundation has made it possible for them to take in 11 more homeless old dogs and make them comfortable and as healthy as possible.
"What a wonderful thing," she said.
