A developer on the Microsoft Robotics Team has built a remotely operated robot for interacting and playing with his pet over the internet.

Jordan Correa named “DarwinBot” after his dog, Darwin. The robot is entirely remote controlled over the Internet, and can launch a ball, retrieve it with its arm, and even dispense doggy treats.

Jordan says because he and his wife both work, it was heartbreaking that Darwin was home alone so many hours in the day.

"Primarily, I wanted to build something that would entertain Darwin, but I also thought it would be fun to create something that would allow me to check on him from work," he said.

Stop polluting our city and our environment. Don't get a dog! Plus, then you won't need a stupid robot to babysit while you're at work all day. Duh.

It would have been cheaper to hire someone to come to the house and play with the dog an hour a day.

I think it is a great idea with great intentions. But I wonder whether the missing interaction between human and pet is a good idea. Aren't dogs very sensitive to human feelings (and visa versa)? Also, given the time it takes to play with the dog when you are taking time off work , wouldn't it be easier and with the dog and human benefiting more from simply bringing the dog to work? Perhaps this news story is really an advertisement for Microsoft Robotics! Nevertheless, I think it is cool.

I should think a M$ employee would be smart enuff to know these things are WALDOS, remote manipulators, NOT "robots" Bad enuff when prime time popTV munged the word, but since these gizmos perform no actions independently nor follow programming - they ain't 'bots. Can't wait till a smartphone is a TV...
