Xtreme, a retired ATF explosives dog who was missing from his home has been returned to his family.

Kellie Smith said the yellow lab got out while the family was away at dinner on Thursday.  He was on the loose for two hours before they got home and realized he was gone.

"He's the sweetest dog we've ever had," she said.

Xtreme is a retired ATF explosives, firearms and ammunitions detecting dog. Kellie says her husband was Xtreme's handler for a little over a year. When he was promoted, the ATF allowed Xtreme to be retired and he's enjoyed the last two years as a house pet, playing with his two best friends, her 10- and 7-year-old sons.

Kellie says a woman who lives a mile-and-a-half away from her called Saturday night and said Xtreme had followed her son home. When she saw a news report she realized where the dog belonged.

"We are very grateful to have him home with us," Kellie said.  "He was well taken care of and we are grateful for that."
