The CDC reports that 14 people in 9 states have been infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Infantis.
"People who became ill, the thing that was common among them was that they had fed their pets Diamond Pet Foods," CDC spokeswoman Lola Russell said.
And "multiple brands of dry pet food" produced by Diamond at their South Carolina facility have been linked to some of the human Salmonella infections.
Individuals handling dry pet food can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with surfaces exposed to this product.
Pets with Salmonella infections may have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If left untreated, pets may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.
