The company that owns three malls in the Puget Sound area is banning sales of pets in more than 70 shopping centers across the U.S.
Global Animal reports that shopping center developer Macerich is adopting a new policy in an effort to break the puppy mill business chain.
Macerich malls in the Puget Sound area are Redmond Town Center, Kitsap Mall and Cascade Mall in Burlington.
Macerich won't renew the leases of existing pet stores that sell animals and in their place, Global Animal reports.
Global Animal says Macerich's pet sale ban is partly the result of film producer and animal activist Jennifer Peterson's crusade against puppy mills. She started a Facebook page "Boycott Barkworks" after she adopted a dog from a store in Los Angeles and the dog became sick.
